Andy’s Blog – Day 2 World Dairy Expo

The theme for World Dairy Expo 2015 is ‘Dairy in our DNA’. Wisconsin car licence plates proudly carry the strap line “America’s Dairy State” and there is a strong sense that many families still earn their living off the land. Walking around the various exhibition halls at the Expo – and there are many – Nick and I have been struck by the number of families at the show and especially the number of young people (school and college kids) in attendance, all of whom seem genuinely excited and interested in what’s going on.

There is a strong sense that farming in America is still the territory of the small farm holder. Within the barns that the cows are kept before showing, almost all of the exhibitors seem to be family farms, passed on from generation to generation and at the show working as a family unit truly ‘dairy in their DNA’.

DNA and the science of animal genetics and breeding is a key part of the Cheshire and Warrington offer which we are here in Madison to promote. The US farming sector is huge – the largest in the world – and just one of the markets we will be targeting through the GREAT UK Challenge Fund between now and March next year.

As an aside it’s not been lost on us that one of the more ironic things to strike us during our short time in Wisconsin is that America’s Dairy Capital is also known as the Badger State…!

The GREAT Britain campaign showcases the best of what the UK has to offer to inspire the world and encourage people to visit, do business, invest and study in the UK. It is the Government’s most ambitious international promotional campaign ever, uniting the efforts of the public and private sector to generate jobs and growth for Britain.
