Our ambition is to create a local economy worth £50 billion by 2040. Ensuring our businesses have the skilled workforce they need now and in the future, is paramount to achieving this.
Apprenticeships are one way to combine on the job training, studying for a qualification and access to real life work experience. They also help to support businesses to shape and influence the skilled workforce they need to increase economic growth.
Our Skills Strategy has an ambition to stimulate employer demand for Apprenticeships in Cheshire across a range of sectors, in particular those priority sectors which are seen as having a vital role in the future growth of Cheshire and Warrington’s economy.
We will support businesses to have greater ownership and influence over the skills system. It will work with businesses and providers to identify skills priorities and ensure effective alignment of provision. This includes ensuring a quality Apprenticeship offer relevant to business needs.
Expanding the provision of Higher Level Apprenticeships is key to widening participation into Higher Education and retaining talented young people, whilst increasing the economic prosperity of our businesses.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a job with training. Being an apprentice means that you have a job that includes gaining recognised qualifications and essential skills whilst you are working and earning a wage. Apprenticeships are designed around the needs of employers.
Levels of Apprenticeship
An apprenticeship has an equivalent education level and can be:
- Intermediate – equivalent to 5 GCSE passes
- Advanced – equivalent to 2 A level passes
- Higher – can lead to NVQ Level 4 and above, or a foundation degree
Employing an Apprentice
Apprentices can be new or existing employees (if their job role is changing/expanding) and combine working whilst studying for a work based qualification from GCSE to degree level. You could get funding or a Grant to employ an apprentice.
Cheshire & Warrington Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA)
The Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA) offers a unique approach to the recruitment of apprentices. The ATA model is intended to support the delivery of a high quality Apprenticeship programme with a focus on small employers who wish to use the services of an ATA to source, arrange and host their Apprenticeships.
The distinctive feature of the ATA model is that it is the ATA which acts as the apprentice’s employer and which places them with a host employer.
Cheshire and Warrington has an existing network of Apprenticeship Ambassadors. Ambassadors are young people and employers who are passionate about Apprenticeships. The role of our ambassadors is to improve access to quality information about Apprenticeships and inspire others to consider this vocational route.
Our ambassadors will support local events and are keen to share their experiences of apprenticeships with other young people and businesses.
